Community-based organisations: how small groups can be seen

Community-based organisations are often closest to the people they serve, yet many funders never hear of them. A few simple habits change that.
Write down what you do
Prepare a one-page description: your area, your members, your activities and your results so far. Update it twice a year.
Document your work
Keep simple records: dates, numbers of people reached, short stories and photos taken with consent. These become the evidence in future proposals.
Get registered and organised
Registration, a bank account in the organisation's name and a basic set of minutes and accounts show that you are ready to manage support.
Be listed and be reachable
Appear in directories and keep a working phone number or email. Many opportunities are lost because nobody can reach the organisation.
Join networks
Coalitions and forums introduce you to partners and share calls for proposals. They are one of the most effective routes for small groups.
Where to go next
Search and compare organisations on the NGO Directory Africa, which lists 13,580 organisations across 54 countries.
