Consultancy or full-time: choosing your path in development

Many development professionals reach a point where they ask whether to stay in a permanent job or to move into consultancy. Both are valid, and they suit different seasons of a career.

What a full-time role gives you

Regular income, benefits, a team and a clear route to promotion. You also learn how one organisation works in depth and build long relationships.

What consultancy gives you

Variety, flexibility and often a higher daily rate. You work on short assignments, build a wide network and choose your focus. In return you carry the risk of gaps between contracts and manage your own taxes, insurance and pension.

Questions to ask yourself

  • Do I have a specialism that clients will pay for?
  • Can I cover several months without income?
  • Do I have a network that can bring me work?
  • Do I enjoy selling my own services?

A sensible way to start

Many people test consultancy through a few short assignments while still employed, or by negotiating part-time work. This lets you learn the practical side before you commit.
