NGO interview questions and how to answer them

Interviews for NGO roles usually test three things: whether you can do the work, whether you can work with people, and whether you share the organisation's purpose. Preparing a few strong examples will carry you through most questions.
The questions you should expect
- Tell us about yourself and why this role.
- Describe a project you led and what it achieved.
- Tell us about a time something went wrong and how you handled it.
- How do you work with communities, partners and donors?
- How do you manage a deadline when resources are limited?
Use a simple structure
Answer with the situation, what you did, and what happened as a result. Keep each answer to about two minutes and finish with the result, ideally with a number or a clear change.
Research the organisation
Read its recent reports, its strategy and its partners. Prepare one or two thoughtful questions about its work, which also shows genuine interest.
Prepare for practical tests
Some interviews include a short written task or a presentation. Practise explaining a plan or a budget clearly and briefly.
Close with confidence
Summarise why you fit the role, thank the panel and ask about next steps.
