How to write a CV for NGO and UN jobs

A strong CV for development work is not a list of duties. It is a short, evidence-based case that you can do this job. These steps help you build one.

Start with a focused profile

Write three or four lines at the top: who you are, your core field, your years of experience and the kind of role you want. Rewrite it for each application so it mirrors the job.

Show results, not duties

For each role, list what changed because of your work. Name the programme, the place, the people reached and the outcome. A line such as "trained 120 community health volunteers across three counties" says more than "responsible for training".

Match the language of the advert

Many organisations screen applications against the skills and tools named in the vacancy. Use those exact terms where they truthfully apply, for example monitoring and evaluation, donor reporting or stakeholder engagement.

Get the details right

  • List your most recent role first and keep dates consistent.
  • Add languages, key software and relevant certificates in a short section.
  • Give two referees who know your recent work.
  • Save as a PDF unless told otherwise, with a clear file name.

Keep it short and clean

Two pages is enough for most roles. Use plain formatting, a readable font and generous spacing so a recruiter can scan it in seconds.
